When I taught in Riga Business School I asked my students "what is the official language of the USA?".
They all said English. I told them it's unanimous, all of you are wrong. They were mystified and one hesitatingly asked about Spanish?.
I told them there isn't an official language in the USA. It's simply not a federal question and that there's a free market in languages. In NY you can deal with the city govt in 50 different languages. When I worked as a bilingual teaching assistant in a middle school in Spanish Harlem (120th St & 1st Ave) there was a school in Queens that taught in 57 different languages.
