We don't "have" two apts. My wife owns one and we rent the other. "Have" = own, not rent.
My consumerism: I'm a walking, talking economic depression. If all consumers my age behaved like I do, the economy would crash. The six words that have kept me out of financial trouble: "but do I really need it."
Since you believe in individual charity you seem to agree with the Republican Party from Bush 1's "thousand points of light" to all the American oligarchs' foundations that maintain the charade that they're changing the world. It's a 1-2% wealth tax and 30-50% top marginal rate income taxes that should pay for all the social, health and education needs of your poor Ecuadorean friends. I'm all in favor of a wealth tax indexed to the Gini coefficient index of inequality and would love to make enough money to pay it. Tax the assets of my former Ecuadorean client, Ecoventura (Galapagos Network), and your charity becomes unnecessary. The tax system is the best tool to finance services and just give poor women cash to pull poor children out of poverty. https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/entities/publication/1c4e0bb9-7e03-51d4-b135-cac585e9bb1f
