Why does NATO exist?

Ask the elderly Berliners who lived through the 1948 Berlin airlift as children.

Ask the 1956 Hungarians and 1968 Czechs who didn't have Article 5's security umbrella.

Ask the 1981 Solidarnosc Poles who lived eight years under "you do it, or we will" Soviet-mandated martial law until the Berlin wall fell in 1989.

Ask the Kosovars spared Serbian ethnic cleansing in 1999.

Ask the post-Dayton Agreement residents of Sarajevo who have lived in peace since November 1995.

Ask the citizens of all the ex-Warsaw Pact states who rushed to join ASAP after the fall of the Berlin Wall, including ALL the Latvians I meet in Riga and Jurmala.

And, finally, ask the Ukrainians who have lived the difference between Article 5 and the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.
