The Russian logic that my Jewish grandparents born in Vinnitsya, Rivne and Chmelnik could be "foreign born" somehow escapes me, but partially explains why my paternal grandfather as a 8 year old was a pogrom target in Kishinev in 1903. The end result was he indirectly helped sink the Russian navy at Tsushima when Jacob Schiff organised a loan of $200m to finance the Japanese war effort in revenge for the Kishinev murders.
