The genocidal war launched by Russia, Europe's last colonial empire, against Ukraine tells us one thing: authoritarian kleptocrats faced with the threat of the good example--prosperous open democratic neighbors--will fight to take them down. They see western soft power, democracy and human rights promotion as aggression. So do their Christian nationalist, xenophobic and fascist useful idiots in the West.
