The anthropologist Marvin Harris, in his Cows, Pigs and Witches, wrote that pigs, since they don't sweat, are competitors with humans for scarce water resources in the Middle East. They'd forage for scarce riverside vegetation and pig overpopulation would threaten delicate river ecosystems.

But I'd say that this is an additional explanation, not one that negates your class-based one.
