The Ukrainian model of governance has been contractual, based on rights, since the mid 17th century Cossack Hetmanate. The Russian model of governance is based on absolute Tsarist power to collect tribute, learned from the Mongols. Ukraine is bottom-up, Russia top-down. A truce will only give Russia time to prepare for the next round, meaning that we'll just have to repeat the job, as we had to with Germany. Half defeated empires always become revanchist and more dangerous. There is no alternative to total victory. Putinism is the tip of the spear of a global alliance of authoritarian kleptocrats dressed in populist, climate denier and religious clothing (Trump, Erdogan, Orban, Duterte, Bolsonaro, LePen, Salvini/Meloni, Vox in Spain, AfD in Germany) aimed at democracy.
