In The Closed Circle David Pryce-Jones writes about the Arab world holding the key to the chains that bind it in a closed circle of collectivist shame and honor--but refusing to use it because it threatens their Islamic identity. The Netflix documentary Undercover Egypt is a more recent exposition of the same problem. It's a totalitarian collectivist system that views individual rule-breakers as heretics to be banished.
