I'm an American expat who's lived in five foreign countries, but living in gun-happy rural America is one foreign country I wouldn't risk living in. One look at the presentations I used to teach US history, the Medium articles I've written about the Vietnam and Central American Wars and I'd get death threats from some of the kids' Trumpster parents. No amount of money would be enough to lure this secular NY Jew into the belly of that Fox-fed theocratic beast. I might make an exception for schools in rural Vermont, New Hampshire, Lake Tahoe's and western Massachusetts' ski areas. Elsewhere in rural America my history courses have already been criminalized. https://medium.com/illumination-curated/the-white-flight-from-history-f55390466991

Attracting the best talent requires a civic culture of open enquiry and empirical scepticism, not just money. Rural America has taken a hard right turn that's fundamentally hostile to that talent.

My first teaching experience was in a bilingual middle school at 120th St and 1st Avenue in the cheap and dangerous NY of 1978-79. My last was teaching investments, entrepreneurship and history in Riga Business School from 2012-16.
