I’m a short guy (5’9", 173 cm) who plays a "size-ist” sport: basketball. Short guys have to be fast to be giant-killers. Added weight = slower. Slower = loser. If I don’t like to lose, I don’t add the weight. Even 1-2 kgs makes a huge difference. If I add weight, I can’t get my body to do what it has to do to not lose, especially against opponents who are 20-50 years younger than I.
Like economics, this is a dismal science: either cut consumption or burn the calories consumed. It's raise taxes or cut spending. I can't issue caloric t-bonds to postpone paying for increased consumption. There is no caloric treasury market to work around added weight my body's performance. And better performance that wins is superior to worse performance that loses games. This is not size-ism or discrimination. It's the simple reality of body maintenance to get the performance needed to enjoy a sport I love. Golfers may not have to think this way. But skiers, swimmers, surfers, hikers, mountaineers, cyclists, footballers, frisbee and rugby players have to. Unless your only sports are golf and chess, you're in the latter group.
