Buona sera. I went to Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Graz in 1978, but declined to return after they elected the amnesiac war criminal Waldheim in 1980. You might find this article about my late twin survivor friend Otto Klein, re-birthed by liberation on January 27, 1945, an interesting addition to rememberance culture: https://medium.com/lessons-from-history/seeing-civilizations-thin-red-line-at-auschwitz-with-otto-klein-mengele-twin-survivor-d4cd8c3fb297
I went to Auschwitz with him and 150 Swiss school teachers in November 2000.
I returned to Austria in 1998, visiting Haider-land Carinzia from a summer in Grado, near Trieste. We were astonished at how poor and economically inert it was compared to bustling prosperous Friuli rebuilt after the 1978 earthquake.
I've been an ABD (all but doctorate) in history since 1985. I neither recommend nor forecast you'll break my ABD record.
