America supported the CIA coup against Mossadegh in 1953, supported, but did not create the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan (ask Osama Bin Laden and other Saudi rich who financed them), supported Saddam Hussein's Iraq against the Iranian theocracy's export of jihadism, supported a number of jihadi groups against Assad (as in Afghanistan, the classic blowback scenario). But the idea that there would be no jihadis in the Muslim world without the US is ridiculous. It implies local Muslims have no agency at all. Dr. Zawahiri, the co-founder of Al-Qaeda would vehemently disagree. So would the jihadi assassins of Anwar Sadat and Sayyid Qutb, the leading ideologist of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Imperial powers backing jihadis in the Muslim world goes back to the Kaiser's Germany, continued with Nazi Germany's jihad made in Germany sponsorship of Amin Al-Husseini (the Muslim Pope) and into the cold war Soviets' sponsorship of the PLO.

And your point about border security is pure blood libel.
