After reading this about how democracies commit suicide would you still think I underestimate the gravity of the event? https://medium.com/lessons-from-history/how-do-democracies-die-3cadda6c4eff

A far more overtly authoritarian Mussolini (compared to the ADHD-driven Trump Mussomini) took three years to seize absolute power. So the 2026 midterms will be held no matter what the Trump-Musk-Thiel-Andreessen broligarch-Christo-fascist alliance wishes.

Though I foresee their authoritarian power grab, I don't think it'll include selectively taking away voting rights in Dearborn and foreign born citizens since the federal government doesn't administer elections, states and counties do.

I do foresee them trying to gut the regulatory state with a feedback loop of livestreaming DOGE budget cut and Section F civil servant firing schemes reported by Fox and then pitched in congressional committees by attention-grabbing MAGA fanatics like MTG and Chip Roy. Whether those Project 2025 measures get through a House with a 3-5 member Republican majority AND a Thune-led Republican Senate majority unwilling to give up the institutional prerogative of its filibuster is doubtful. Possible, or even probable if they widen their majorities in 2026, but hardly inevitable.

Some ambitious lower ranking military officers may obey illegal orders. Many of their colleagues won't. Milley and many of his colleagues will be working the phones of their former comrades to preserve the apolitical status of the institution they treasure.
