Actually Kennedy kept his crazier generals like Curtis Lemay in check and gave Khrushchev the off ramp to stand down by doing the deal to remove US missiles from Turkey. Khrushchev had triggered the crisis by thinking he could roll a young and allegedly inexperienced US president after the lack of an American response to the building of the Berlin Wall the previous year. So Kennedy, and the Soviet submarine admiral Vasilii Arkhipov (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2sqI9aBas0) , who refused to give the launch key and fire his missile, together saved the world.

Documentary about Arkhipov:

Khrushchev precipitated the crisis by underestimating Kennedy and how seriously the US would react to missiles 90 miles from Miami. Imagine how Russia would react if NATO put nukes on the Finnish-Russian border.

Of course, if you prefer to ignore historical facts and be what KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov called a "useful idiot" for the USSR and its successor mafia with a flag kleptocracy, you're free to do so. Reality and fact denial is a transatlantic disease.
